PDF layers and optional content

Some PDFs contain optional content groups, often called layers. A reader can show or hide these groups without necessarily deleting the underlying data.

Visibility is not removal

Hiding a layer or cropping a page is not a privacy measure. Content may remain in the file and be made visible again. If information must be removed, use a redaction process and inspect the resulting document.

Conversion can flatten an appearance

A page image captures what the renderer displays, so it may no longer contain selectable layers or text. That can be useful for a fixed visual copy but loses the source’s editable structure and accessibility information.

Tools and limits

These tools do not provide a layer editor or guarantee preservation of every optional-content setting during page copying. For technical drawings or layered artwork, use the original application and verify the active layers before exporting.
