Filling and flattening PDF forms

An interactive PDF form stores field definitions and values. A scanned form may only be a picture of empty boxes and needs a different editing workflow.

Inspect exact field names

Use Fill PDF Forms and choose Inspect fields. The names embedded in a PDF may differ from its printed labels. Supply a JSON mapping such as {"fullName":"Asha","agree":true}. Text values, checkboxes and choice fields are supported; an unknown field name causes an error.

Flatten a final copy

Flattening AcroForm fields turns their appearances into page content so the original fields are no longer interactive. This site’s tool flattens form fields only; it does not claim to flatten every annotation, comment or stamp.

Check reader compatibility

Open the completed file in the recipient’s PDF reader, close it, reopen it and confirm the values persist. Preserve an editable original before flattening. Forms with complex JavaScript or XFA structures may require an application designed for those features.
