Inspecting PDF metadata before sharing

Document properties can reveal a title, author, subject, keywords, software name or dates. Additional information can also exist in XMP streams and other objects.

Start with document properties

Open your PDF reader’s properties panel and check the author and title. Search the visible pages for names and identifiers. Review comments and attachments separately, because they are not equivalent to the document information fields.

Edit or remove deliberately

Metadata Editor changes or clears the Info fields you enter. Metadata Remover deletes the Info dictionary and document/page XMP metadata streams. Neither operation promises complete anonymization of all content in a PDF.

Verify a fresh output

Close the source and open the downloaded file so you do not accidentally inspect the old version. Confirm the properties you intended to remove. Keep the original in a secure location if you need the source history or a signed copy.
