PDF versions and feature compatibility

A PDF version identifies the format revision associated with the document. It does not, by itself, guarantee that every viewer supports every object or optional feature in the file.

Reader support varies

Interactive forms, encryption methods, embedded content and advanced graphics can depend on the reader. If a recipient cannot open a file, ask which application and version they use and obtain the exact error rather than changing the extension.

Edits may change document structure

A library rewrite can create a structurally different file while preserving visible pages. Page copying may omit bookmarks, signatures or attachments. The Rebuild tool should therefore be checked as a new output, not assumed to preserve every source feature.

Test the actual requirement

Open the final output in the recipient’s reader and inspect every page. For archival or accessibility requirements, use a validator for the relevant standard. The PDF header version alone does not prove PDF/A, PDF/UA or print conformance.
