How to compress a PDF: measure the actual saving

Optimize PDF object storage and report the measured size difference.

By Chandan ji · Published · Updated

Rewrites readable PDF objects using compressed object streams. If the rewrite is larger, the original file is returned and the result clearly reports no saving.

Before you start

Keep the original document in a safe location and work on a copy. Open it in a PDF reader, note the page count and check whether text is selectable. Close unrelated memory-heavy tabs if the file is large. The public tools accept up to 50 MB per input file, while device memory can impose a lower practical limit.

Follow the tool workflow

  1. Open Compress PDF and read the limitation beside the controls.
  2. Select the correct source file. Confirm the filenames before you continue.
  3. Check the selected settings and run the operation. The progress area reports processing; an error means no successful conversion is available.
  4. Download the actual result and open it in the application that will be used by the recipient.

A concrete example

Compare the actual original and output byte sizes. For a strict 200 KB upload limit, reducing scan resolution at the source may be necessary.

Understand what is preserved

This is structural optimization. It does not downsample photos or guarantee a target file size. An already optimized scan may not become smaller.

Verify before relying on the result

Compare the original and downloaded byte sizes. If the file is already compact, the tool returns the original and explicitly reports no saving. It does not force an arbitrary percentage or promise an image downsampling preset that it does not implement.

If the operation fails

Use the displayed error to narrow the problem. Confirm the format and file size, then try a small non-sensitive sample. A password-protected PDF may need to be unlocked with a known password first. For a large scan, split it into smaller groups. Contact support with the tool name, browser and error message; do not send private documents.

Privacy and related reading

Document processing in these public tools runs locally. Pages, libraries and fonts still load from the website; see the privacy policy. A local operation is not a substitute for the security requirements of your workplace.
